Durham College’s Campus Walk program is a service designed to keep students, staff and visitors safe on campus during the evening.
The program is run by trained student teams who are available to help people walk to their car, residence or anywhere around campus on request. Operating on weeknights, it aims to ensure everyone feels secure navigating the campus after dark.
The timing of the program is a reassurance for students concerned about safety. Earlier this school year, a student made threats against Durham College, which heightened concerns about campus security. Although the issue was resolved without incident, it highlighted the importance of proactive measures. The program provides peace of mind, especially for those who stay on campus for late-night study sessions, work or other events.
Sai, a Campus Walk worker explained how the service works. “If you need us, you have to first give us a call then we will dispatch a Campus Walk worker to your location,” he said.
Sai also assured students that the program is well-staffed. “There are two of us working every evening, ready to help,” he said, adding that support is readily available during weeknights.
The program has already caught the attention of some students. Christian, a student who recently learned about Campus Walk, shared his thoughts. “I just heard about this program. I hope it will have an effect and create a safe environment around the school,” he said.
Christian’s comments reflect the hope that many have for the program’s potential to enhance campus safety.
By offering this service, Durham College is taking steps to ensure its community feels safe, no matter what time of day.
