Webinar helps students improve self-care and leadership skills

Durham College (DC) held a webinar about self-care and leadership this spring aimed at helping students build their skills.

Tyler Creces, student successs coordinator at the Institute of Student Leadership (ISL) at DC, organized the Self-Care and Leadership webinar.

She says people often think about leadership as “leading other people” but it’s also about leading yourself.

Creces advocates for scheduling self-care time into your daily routine “even if it’s just like going for a walk with a friend or sitting quietly and reading a book for yourself, doing something for you to try and calm you down in the chaos that it is being a student.”

Creces said staff have their own spaces for learning about leadership so the ISL and its events are more targeted towards at Durham College students to maintain a safe secure space for them.

While the events focus on current students, alumni can show up as well.

“I think leadership is integral in any kind of area workplace, even in your life, because it can help really kind of shape at least a goal for you,” said Eldon Atkin, Riot Radio’s volunteer coordinator and former Durham College student.

The ISL is a self-registration course on DCConnect.
