What happens after the season? How Durham Lords players stay ready

The regular season may be over, but the work doesn’t stop for Durham College’s men’s soccer team. As the Lords wrap up their competitive schedule in the fall, the off-season becomes a vital period for recovery, skill development and preparation for the year ahead.

Players like Teagan Marks use this time to recharge physically and mentally after a busy season in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) competition. “My off-season, I just recover, take a break from soccer, hang out with friends and family, and do some of my hobbies,” Marks said.

For other athletes, staying active during the break is key. Deandre Watkis continues to train throughout the off-season, playing pickup games at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre Dome and competing in local tournaments. “I do pickup games in the Dome over by the field, and I just finished an indoor tournament,” Watkis said.

The Durham Lords consistently rank among the top contenders in the OCAA. Returning players are expected to use the off-season to refine their skills, while incoming recruits will have their chance to make an impression during tryouts.

Tryouts for next season’s team will be held at Vaso’s Field on Aug. 12 and 13 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. It’s a valuable chance for athletes to showcase their skills and contribute to the team’s future success.

While professional soccer players in leagues like Major League Soccer (MLS) follow intense off-season regimens—balancing structured rest periods, training camps and even international charity matches—Marks says the college experience allows for a different approach. “They have a lot more on. They have to be recovered,” he said.

Still, the off-season remains critical for student-athletes looking to stay competitive. Durham’s soccer program provides access to top-tier athletic facilities, allowing players to maintain fitness and refine their tactical skills before the new season begins.

Whether it’s recovery, personal fitness, or game-day preparation, the off-season is far from a break for Durham’s soccer players. It’s a time to rebuild, refocus and gear up for another shot at the OCAA title.
