The Durham College women’s volleyball team secured a decisive victory over the George Brown Huskies on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in front of a packed crowd.
The team extended their winning streak to four games, bolstering their momentum as they prepare to host the national championships.
Before the game head coach Tony Clark commented on his excitement for what’s to come this season, emphasizing the team’s focus on taking things step by step.
“We want to be prepared to be able to compete,” said Clarke, highlighting the importance of securing their position at nationals in March. “Firstly, in our east division, win that title, then hopefully win the provincial title as well.”
With women’s sports gaining popularity, Clarke expressed his appreciation for the growing support. “Not only on campus but all over, interest has increased,” he said
A 2024 research study by Canadian Women and Sport, in partnership with Toronto-based consulting agency IMI Consulting, found that 67 per cent of Canadians aged 13-65 support women’s sports, with two in five identifying as “avid fans.”
Scott Dennis, Durham College’s director of athletics and recreation, reflected on how the rise in popularity of women’s sports has positively influenced the campus. He echoed Clarke’s sentiments about growing interest, emphasizing its broader impact. “It’s great seeing women being active in all sports,” said Dennis, noting the enthusiasm and support surrounding women’s athletics at Durham.
Looking ahead, Clarke shared his strategy for maintaining the team’s energy and focus. “Just try to get in and get out,” he said, explaining the importance of conserving energy for future games.
The Lords dominated the Huskies with a 3-0 victory and will aim to keep the momentum going this season as they pursue their goal of competing at nationals.
