Oshawa’s newest park is a product of intentionally incorporating the needs of the community to create something for everyone.
Rose Valley Park, located on Thornton Road North south of Taunton Road, celebrated its grand opening on Oct. 4.
The $5.48-million park offers two playgrounds, a pickleball court, gardens and, most notably, a BMX track that is one of the largest in Canada.

Brandon McQuaid, from Bowmanville, said he visited the park more than once to enjoy his favourite part – the BMX track.
“I think it’s absolutely amazing,” he said. “They have something for all levels of kids from all ages, all aptitudes of the sport and all levels.”
The project began in October of 2023 but didn’t finish until this fall.
Oshawa city councillor, John Gray, explained the land the park was built on had been untouched for many years. In the area, an unauthorized BMX park was built which was hidden behind the trees.
To Gray, this was a safety concern. If someone were to hurt themselves, the hidden nature of the park would make it difficult for people to notice someone was in trouble.
The solution was for the city to build a BMX track accessible to the public.
“By putting it out front and centre, right at Thornton Road, you can see the park,” Gray said. “Somebody can call very quickly if somebody needs medical care.”
Gray said community feedback is important and is considered during the planning process for parks. People can participate in surveys, attend public meetings and submit forms online.
“We want to find out what the elements are that need to go into this park so that you’re going to be satisfied,” said Gray.
According to Gray, Rose Valley was designed to suit the needs of everyone. There are trails for those who enjoy walking, a pickleball court for low impact sport and even a shaded place to sit to watch kids play.
“The nice thing is it can be for a whole family, the entire family, from the very young to the very old and those of us in between,” said Gray.
To him, parks are important to the City of Oshawa for the public’s quality of life.
“Most importantly, we’re getting people outside active and having fun,” said Gray.
