Third family member dies after Oshawa house fire

A 12-year-old girl has died from injuries sustained in a fatal house fire last week in Oshawa, bringing the death toll to three.

In a news release on Monday, Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) said the girl, who was pulled from the burning McGrigor Street home by firefighters on March 12, died early Monday morning.

Last week on Wednesday morning, the fire broke out at McGrigor St., near Centre Street S., which took the lives of a 46-year-old mother and nine-year-old sister.

Her 56-year-old father was also taken to hospital but is expected to survive, police said in the release.

In a recent news article, CTV News Toronto released the names of the victims. Vivian Bresca, wife and mother, daughters Sigalit, 12 and Ayelet, 9 and father and husband Josef Bresca.

The post-mortem exams have been completed and there are no signs of foul play. “The injuries sustained are believed to have resulted from the fire,” police said in the release.

In a statement published six days ago, Mayor Dan Carter said: “We are profoundly saddened by this heartbreaking tragedy. On behalf of City Council and the City of Oshawa, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause and origin of the fire. While the official cause has not been determined, officials say they do not believe it was arson.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the surviving family member.

Donations will go toward medical expenses outside of OHIP, rebuilding after the loss of the home, helping with funeral arrangements and assisting with day-to-day living expenses.
