Oshawa initiative delivers warmth, one pair of socks at a time

A simple pair of socks can make all the difference for someone in need. That’s the idea behind SOCKS, a grassroots organization started by Oshawa resident Terrol Maciver.

Maciver founded the initiative 10 years ago during a difficult time in her life. Struggling financially and emotionally, she was unsure of how she could help others when she was barely getting by herself. But after dropping off school supplies at a local shelter, an idea struck.

“I fought that voice that said, ‘I can’t do anything, I’m broke,’” she said.

“And then socks came to mind because it’s something that anybody can do because it’s very inexpensive.”

That small idea grew into a movement. Using social media, Maciver spread the word, and soon, others wanted to get involved. Today, SOCKS has expanded to communities across Ontario, with donation drives in cities like Sudbury, Kingston and Timmins.

“We actually receive a huge paycheque, and we call it joy equity,” Maciver said. “We do it for the feels.”

Unlike traditional charities, SOCKS doesn’t accept cash donations. Instead, people are encouraged to donate new socks, which are collected year-round at various drop-off locations, including Front Porch Mentors in Oshawa’s Midtown Mall.

Maciver says the impact of a simple pair of socks became clear to her one day in Toronto. Carrying a bag of donations, she approached a man sitting on a milk crate near Union Station and asked if he could use a pair.

“In the politest, most educated way, he was like, ‘Thank you so much. That would be incredible. I am so grateful,’” he said.

“It dropped any judgment I had, and it really educated me. All of these people out there are human beings.”

For Maciver, the mission is simple: keep feet warm and show kindness one pair of socks at a time.
