Filippo Savone’s career changed when he moved from working in domestic admissions to the international office at Humber College. After finishing the immigration consulting program and becoming a licensed consultant, he discovered a passion for helping students from around the world. He enjoyed guiding them through the challenges of studying in Canada and found purpose in supporting their journeys.
This passion led him to Durham College, where he achieved his goal of becoming an international student advisor, helping students adjust to life in a new country.
“These students are here for years, and many have never been to Canada before. They need to learn how our society works,” says Savone.

He knows that the constant changes in immigration regulations can add stress to their experiences. “Every few months, policies change, which can be very confusing,” he adds.
Savone stands out because of his empathy and commitment to understanding each student’s situation. “There’s a lot of empathy required in this role,” he explains. His background in customer service has helped him connect personally with students.

With time running out, Savone worked hard to find a quick solution. “We had to get them the right permit in just a few weeks,” he recalls. Despite the pressure, the student completed their co-op successfully and graduated.
“Seeing them at graduation, knowing what they overcame, was incredibly rewarding,” Savone shares, beaming with pride.

“You never know what someone is going through,” he reflects.

As he looks ahead, Savone offers advice for those interested in similar careers. “Gather all the facts before jumping to solutions,” he suggests. “Miscommunication can waste time, so understanding a student’s situation fully is important.”
