More than 2,000 prospective students flocked to this year’s Durham College spring open house, with 166 attendees submitting applications for various programs, according to figures from the college.
The event, held on March 23, was aimed at potential students, and provided opportunities to engage with faculty, tour facilities, and delve into program details.
President of the college, Elaine Popp, said the variety of academic options offered by the college both at Oshawa and Whitby allows the college to cater to “all respective students.”
Popp said the event allows students to confirm their decisions and prepares them to “launch their careers.”
Dan Murrell, director of Admission Services, said during the open house that more than 160 students have applied for various programs at the college.
He said among the 147 programs offered by the college paramedics, Practical Nursing, and Dental Hygiene, stood out as the most sought-after.
During the open house, some programs, such as Electromechanical Engineering Technology, offered interactive demonstrations.
According to Murrell, during the event, the college waived the application fees and gave applicants who accepted the college’s offer to study at the institution free T-shirts.
With different faculty stalls set in the Pit, students had an option for one-on-one sessions with faculty members.
Stephanie Thomson, a student advisor in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Design, said a variety of programs offered by the college gave students a greater range of choices and the opportunity to join the college.
For those unable to attend this semester’s event, the college provides year-round tours to explore the campus and its facilities.
Popp said that by visiting Durham’s website, students can find information about how to book a tour. She said, “We know once you come and check us out, you are going to feel that it is the right decision.”
