Oshawa’s Bollywood Holi Festival celebrates diversity

Oshawa hosted its first Bollywood-styled Holi event, attracting over two hundred attendees to the Junction Club in downtown Oshawa.

Holi, known as the “festival of colours,” is a Hindu festival primarily celebrated in India and Nepal. However, it is also observed in other parts of the world with Hindu communities. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

Organized by Euphoria Entertainment, this year’s event adopted the Bollywood theme and attracted a diverse turnout. Immigrants from India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka and local Canadians celebrated the event.

Sarinilanka Perera, a former student of Durham College and one of the event organizers, pointed out the unique features of the event.

The choice of venue, the Junction Club in downtown Oshawa,, and the innovative performances, such as an LED robot and a drummer, were standout elements.

These, she said, contributed to a memorable experience for the attendees.

Another attendee, Jatin Saharan, a recent immigrant from India, said he was drawn to the vibrant atmosphere and energy at the event.

He said he enjoyed the “colourful lights, lively music, and the opportunity to celebrate Holi with a diverse group of people.”

He said the event reminded him of celebrations in his home country of India. Usha Chettri from Nepal said the creative additions set the event apart and created a fun and exciting experience for attendees.
