Imagine spending your summer in Quebec City or on the coast of New Brunswick, all while learning French and meeting students from across Canada. You can do just that—without worrying about how to pay for it.
The Explore program is a government-funded language immersion program that allows English-speaking students to study French and French-speaking students to study English. The program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents and is designed to make second language learning accessible, fun and affordable. Sessions are offered in the spring and summer, with in-person and virtual options available.
For participants aged 16 and older, the program typically lasts between 31 and 33 days. There’s also a three-week summer session for younger students between the ages of 13 and 15.
Regardless of age or experience with French, Explore gives participants an opportunity to improve their language skills while experiencing life in another part of the country.
The program contributes $3,850 per participant aged 16 and older, and $2,760 for those aged 13 to 15. These funds cover tuition, instructional materials, meals, and lodging. Participants only need to pay for personal expenses, transportation to and from the program site, and optional activities.
Beyond the classroom, Explore includes optional activities, cultural experiences and excursions that let participants explore their host communities. Whether it’s hiking, trying local cuisine or practicing French with new friends, the program blends education with adventure.
Adam Schermbrucker from Alberta attended the program in Quebec. He said: “I had the time of my life! Five weeks of eating, learning, and even dreaming in French, while forming life-long friendships. My French is much better, and I’ve learned more about Quebec culture than I ever thought possible.”
Amy Peng, who attended the program in Trois-Rivières, said: “It was the best experience of my life. I improved my French and better understood Quebec culture. It was unforgettable, and I’d love to return.”
When Michael Washington, a student at Trent University, heard about Explore, he was immediately interested. “That’s amazing,” Washington said. “I didn’t know about this, but I definitely might have to apply when I have the free time.”
If you’re ready to take your language skills to the next level while discovering more of Canada, the Explore program might be your ticket.
