MOCK DISASTER: Twenty-one injured, five charged in major accident at DC, Ontario Tech

(A mock disaster exercise is taking place today on the Durham College and Ontario Tech campuses in north Oshawa. Chronicle reporters are working to cover the event as part of the exercise.)

1:51 p.m.

Twenty-one people have been injured and five people are facing charges following a major accident at Ontario Tech and Durham College in north Oshawa.

The exact nature of the charges has not been released, but those individuals are expected to appear in court Sunday.

Superintendent Mark Armstrong of the Durham Regional Police Service told reporters police are still seeking information about suspects and videos from the accident, which happened around 11 a.m. outside Founders Mall, near the Founders Lot 1.

Some of the injured were treated at Founders Hospital.

12:14 p.m.

Paramedics have requested three more ambulances to the scene of an accident on the campus of Durham College and Ontario Tech. Kevin Betts, incident command officer with Durham Regional Police, says high speed and alcohol might be a factor in the three-vehicle crash. Two individuals are trapped in a Tesla and 25-30 people are reported to be injured.

12:02 p.m.

Paramedics at Founders Hospital say 25 people have been injured in the crash on the campus of Ontario Tech and Durham College in north Oshawa. Officials say at least one individual is a child and has severe injuries. Witnesses believe the child who was ejected from a vehicle is six or seven years old. Three people are still at the scene waiting for paramedics.

11:43 a.m.

Officials have now confirmed 20-30 people have been injured in an accident near Founders Lot 1 on the campus of Durham College and Ontario Tech. Witnesses say four people are in a van and two people in a Tesla. A third vehicle, a Hyundai was also involved, witnesses say. Two ambulances took away victims to Founders Hospital.

11:25 a.m.

Fire, ambulance and police are on the scene helping multiple victims. Eyewitnesses say there appear to be several people on the scene who are impaired including two females who were fighting using a beer bottle. The fight broke out after a car crash outside Creme De La Creme Donuts on Founders 1 Lot. Police say a Tesla and a van were involved in the crash.

11:12 a.m.

Fire and ambulance officials are on the scene to help the victims of an accident on the campus of Durham College and Ontario Tech. Several people are on the scene helping multiple victims. Drivers are still in the vehicles.

11:02 a.m.

Three kids were hit by a car just outside the grand opening for Creme De La Creme Donuts at Founders Lot 1. A number of people are trying to help the victims of the car crash. More to come.

10:45 a.m.

A mock disaster exercise is taking place today on the Durham College and Ontario Tech campuses in north Oshawa.

This exercise takes place from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. It involves students from a number of programs along with emergency physicians, Durham paramedics and members of the Whitby fire service.

Emergency vehicles will be involved in the disaster and there will be people acting in distress, the use of smoke machines and people being moved around on stretchers.

This is the second straight year for a mock disaster on this campus.
