Mike Hubicki is the new coach for the Durham Lords men’s volleyball team.
“I’m excited to work with the department coaching staff and athletes at Durham College to nurture the culture of success and championship calibre performance,” said Hubicki in a news release.
“With strong roots in the OVA (Ontario Volleyball Association) and OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association), I’m committed to promoting volleyball in Oshawa and Durham Region, a historically strong centre for high school and OVA volleyball.
“As a recent Master of Science in Sport Science and Recreation graduate, I hope to also utilize my understanding of the current environment post-secondary students operate within to help our students-athletes.”
Hubicki takes over for George Matsusaki, who has decided to retire.
“George has had a very successful run here at Durham College and we’re sad to see him leave the program but wish him the best and hope he enjoys the opportunity to focus on retirement,” said Durham College athletics director Ken Babcock in a news release.
Hubicki has had experience coaching men’s and women’s teams at the OVA level.
He also coached the men’s team at Trent University from 2013 to 2016 and prior to that coached the women’s team at Loyalist College.
Matsusaki is leaving Durham with two OCAA coach of the year awards as well as an overall record of 110-84.
Hubicki starts his job as coach immediately.
