Numerous Durham College students were asked how they feel about the Student Association and the cancelled election, these are their responses.
Name: Bailey Pitre
Program: Social Service Worker
How do you feel about the cancelled SA election at Durham? “I can see that, maybe, our voices won’t get heard because we don’t have a representative [at this time]. Voices of people who want to be heard, may not get heard.”
Do you feel the SA split is a positive or a negative? “I’m all about…unity, both together. We’re on the same grounds.”
What would you like to see in DC’s SA? “Make sure our voices are heard. Some people who want specific things out of their college life aren’t heard because we [currently] don’t have this union. It could definitely impede their learning and their expectation of college life.”
Name: Kyana Graham
Program name: Social Service Worker
How do you feel about the cancelled SA election at Durham? “It’s unfair.”
Do you feel the SA split is a positive or a negative? “I feel it’s a good thing because there are issues that college students have that university students don’t have, and vice versa.”
What would you like to see in DC’s SA? “Inclusive events, actually caring about student life, and having open meetings so students can say what they want to say.”
Name: Nik Slauenwhite
Program name: Business – Marketing
How do you feel about the cancelled SA election at Durham? “To me, it seems a little bit unfair. We share the campus. We should have just as much of a right to representation from our actual student body—people who have our interests in mind.”
Do you feel the SA split is a positive or a negative? “I would think [it is a good idea]. I think the needs of the university students are actually pretty different than the needs of the college students.”
What would you like to see in DC’s SA? “To ensure the school is using funds appropriately…and that the big picture [of the college] is looked after, but also the needs of the students aren’t overlooked.”
Name: Vaughn Weales
Program name: Electromechanical Engineering
How do you feel about the cancelled SA election at Durham? “It’s just kind of weird. I don’t really understand why we don’t get to vote.”
Do you feel the SA split is a positive or a negative? “If [the university] runs their own events, and it doesn’t matter to DC students, then I can’t see it being that much of a problem.”
What would you like to see in DC’s SA? “Just [for students] to be heard if they ever have a problem. Let us actually have a frosh week. I was looking forward to that.”
