After a strong start to the season, UOIT men’s hockey team has hit a rough patch.

The Ridgebacks, ranked No. 4 in the OUA East, lost for the fourth time in its last five games with a 5-4 overtime loss to the No. 5 Concordia Stingers in Ontario University Athletics men’s hockey action at the Campus Ice Centre Friday night.

After an early first period goal by first-year Malik Johnson, The Ridgebacks played from behind most of the night after giving up three goals in three minutes in the first.

Special teams dominated with the Ridgebacks playing 14 minutes on the penalty kill. The Ridgebacks dug themselves out of the 3-1 hole they had put themselves in with goals from fourth-year Nate Mitton and first-year Jack Patterson, who notched his third of the season.

After going down 4-3 late in the third, UOIT’s Mitch Bennett tied it up with his first goal after spending most of November out with an ankle injury.

Special teams have been a problem for the Ridgebacks as of late, with the team collecting more than 10 minutes of penalties in each of its last four losses. Although the Stingers played more minutes on the penalty kill, it was a penalty early in the overtime period that ended it.

Concordia’s game-winning goal in overtime blasted in by the OUA’s leading scorer Anthony De Luca. UOIT has lost all its meetings with Concordia this season.

The Ridgebacks are 11-5-1 on the season, while Concordia is 11-5-0.
