Suspect arrested after lockdown at DC-UOIT

A male suspect is in custody after a lockdown at Durham College and UOIT this afternoon.

Durham Regional Police say a man was seen walking down the halls of the college with what looked like a concealed weapon in the front of his pants. Police were called, including the Tactical Support Unit and the Canine Unit, and the school was in lockdown for about an hour around 2:15 p.m.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was spotted by police near the South Wing entrance and GO bus stop near the main entrance to the college. Police crouched behind garbage cans with their guns raised, and the man put up his hands in submission. Several students stood near the scene laughing before an officer ushered them away from the scene while pointing an automatic weapon at the suspect.

Police then arrested the suspect.

After the arrest, police closed commencement lots one and two to search for the weapon.

Following an investigation, police say they found a plastic gun.

The investigation is ongoing.
