The men’s basketball team is ready to kick off its season after winning the Dave Stewart Tip-Off Tournament.
Durham defeated Fanshawe 63-61 to win its seventh Tip-Off title by overcoming a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter on Saturday, October 18th.
Desmond Rowley, head coach of the Lords, knew his team would complete the comeback against Fanshawe.
“I never worried,” said Rowley. “I knew once we started digging into what we had to do to win, we would be fine.”
Rowley believes the play of his team defensively was a big reason as to why they were successful.
“Defensively, we worked hard,” said Rowley. “We got better each game.”
The Lords defeated the Lambton Lions 78-70 in the first game, and then beat the St. Clair Saints 92-87 in the semi-finals.
Ajahmo Clarke of Durham, led all players with 23 points in the final game, and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Durham is going into the season with a 6-1 pre-season record, but Rowley says it’s time to play when it matters.
“We’re 0-0 now, and all that counts is the 20 games that we’re going to play in the league,” said Rowley.
The Lords are currently 1-0 in the young season, with a 69-62 victory over Loyalist on Tuesday night.
Durham will be hosting Canadore at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
