Durham College will be hosting the OCAA championships for women’s volleyball on Feb. 20-22 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.
Hosting the tournament means Durham will be in the playoffs no matter the team’s final record.
“The host is guaranteed a spot in the championships by a rule change that we made two years ago,” said Scott Gray, senior convenor of the tournament.
“[The change was made] with the rationale of creating a better atmosphere at the championships. The home team usually gets great crowds and the student body as a whole is appreciative of seeing their team compete.”
The hosting school is normally rotated between the East and West divisions on a yearly basis.
The schools looking to host apply to an OCAA group at annual May general meetings. Durham won this year’s bid.
Having the tournament at Durham College has head coach Shane Christopher excited, saying the team in 100 per cent excited to be playing at home for the championships.
Melissa Semeniuk, 2012-13 Durham College female athlete of the year, is also excited.
“We know the lighting better, the floor better, everything, and we’ll also have the home crowd to cheer us on.”
Teams are guaranteed games but to win the championship, a team cannot lose.
Students across UOIT and Durham College are invited to attend the games, which begin on Thursday, Feb 20.
